135 – Forget the Middle Man

I was IMing a friend the other day, for about an hour, when he decided he wanted to send me a link to something and asked over AIM if I was at my computer.

I was *just* talking to him. Over AIM. For the previous hour.

It’s interesting how we forget the tools that help us through our day. It’s also hilarious.

For something completely different, my birthday is next week! Woot! …And cue feeling really old.

    To be fair, there are other devices that can do IM, which may not be able to handle a weblink.

  2. J. Edward says:

    My roommate and I do this often… we share an office, but he’s always invisible. I’ll send him links and such occasionally, but for the must-read ones I’ll ask if he’s online before I send. *smiles*

    For all your friend know, while you were on “a” computer, you could have been using a friend’s computer, or a public (coffeehouse, library, etc.) one, i.e. NOT “yours”, in which case it would have been impolite and/or inadvisable to download said link to it. You should be glad he had the foresight and consideration to ask FIRST…

  4. echo senrath — I get requests all the time while IMing to do things I can’t really do on a mobile device, so one cannot always assume that an AIM respondent is “on a computer”. Welcome to the 21st C. 🙂

    But…they’re in the same room! She could just turn around and look. More to the point, they were having a conversation at the time!

  6. Baughbe says:

    Don’t sweat it, I’ve been on computers for 17 years (yeah, that old) but still have yet to get a PDA, Iphone or other such device and have no interest either. And still people who have known me for years and KNOW I don’t have such a device will make the reverse mistake and wonder if I’m home. As if I’m going to pack up my tower and take it with me shopping.
    OBTW: Happy Birthday!!

  7. Dale says:

    @Baughbe,

    Having used computers for the past 17 years doesn’t make you old. I’ve been using them for 35 years now. I wasn’t going to post this comment until I realized that it was relevant. One of the first programs I used was a chat program. We aren’t old. We were ahead of our time.

    Early happy birthday!

    To be honest, I’m on my phone for AIM a lot these days. Not all links load.

    Just so there’s no confusion, I was referring to the artist’s anecdote, not the strip itself. Our enjuhneer fully deserves a friend-assisted facepalm from the other girl 😉
