157 – Kali’s Chibi Alphonse

157 – Kali’s Chibi Alphonse

Happy Early Halloween!

This is just a perfect costume for Kali. If you don’t recognize the reference, go watch the entirety of the old FullMetal Alchemist and then watch what’s available of the new one. Doooooo it. It’s my favorite anime. (Speed Grapher is a close second.)

Actually, I’m taking suggestions for a new anime to watch. I’m gonna do Fruits Basket next, per recommendation, but I’d like ideas for after that.

Animes I Have Enjoyed: Sailor Moon, FullMetal Alchemist, Serial Experiments Lain, Speed Grapher, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Hikaru no Go, Azumanga Daioh (I have eclectic taste.)

No Dragonball, no Gundam, no Ouran High/silly romantic or over-the-top schoolgirl equivalents, please — I filled that quota with Azumanga Daioh.

I’d recommend Baccano, Black Cat, D.GrayMan, Darker than Black, Last Exile, Heroic Age, Romeo x Juliet, or Tsubasa. All very good series, in my opinion. So, the new Fullmetal Alchemist is good? I’ll have to check it out, cause FMA is one of my favorites too.

  2. Renold says:

    Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Is hilarious.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Is epic. Also is pretty much V for Vendetta.
Chobits. Is cute. Might be a bit too close to the Ouran silly/romantic over-the-top, though.

  3. kiba says:

Huh…didn’t know they had an anime for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

  4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan
Replace the word “Drill” with “penis” when you watch it and it becomes even more ridiculous.

  5. Toloran says:

Go read Princess Tutu. Ignore the synopsis for it though since it will completely mislead you.

  6. mneme says:

Try Trigun. Competent, and yet insanely silly characters; really well done. Maybe Helsing? Though it’s way over the top.

  7. senrath says:

Definite Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan. Also, Soul Eater is good. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (and Kai, and Rei) is good as well.

  8. Felix Lorn says:

Simply because no-one has, i’ll have to say naruto. Good fights, good plot, good characters-though a slightly irritating tendancy to overuse flashbacks.

  9. Freak says:

I recommend “cat soup”, because I do that to everyone. It’s entry-level stuff into my favourite sub-genre of anime. (you might like it; you did enjoy Lain)

I’m really only seeing popular mainstream anime in your list, and I watch precious few of those, so I’ll recommend the following:
    Excel Saga
    Conan the Detective
    Lupin the 3rd
Higurashi No naku Koro Ni (hifive, senrath)
Furi Kuri, sometimes called Fooly Cooly

  10. Tanya says:

Saiyuki is a good anime. It’s three series, of 50 episodes, 25, and then 26. The first set was done by ADV, the others by a different company.

Code Geass is a nice one. Really plot-heavy. And also, even though you said no Gundam, Gundam Wing is a must-see.

  11. Frosty says:

Hmm… most of what I’d suggest are here already. If you enjoy TTGL at all, there’s Gunbuster, an older mecha anime, and its TTGL-esque sequel, Diebuster (AKA Gunbuster 2). Spice and Wolf is fairly good. I like its art. One of my favorites is Asatte no Houkou, a rather obscure anime that has its roots in the seinen-ish drama area without being over-the-top with a touch of fantasy thrown in for good measure.

… It appears my current stock of anime has just vanished into thin air… I’ll list out a couple more: Sousei no Aquarion is friggin hilarious, especially when one considers the manner in which the megazord-like jet-plane-things combine.

  12. volvagia720 says:

An anime close to Hikaru No Go. Would be Yakitate!! Japan (Translation: Fresh Baked Ja(bread). It is also full of amazingly hilarious puns.

  13. tmechanic says:

He he he.. Anime you say, well with over 800 anime DVDs I think I have a few suggestions for you.

Let’s see, Sol Bianca, especially if you can find the original, Tokyo Underground, Neo- Ranga, Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crash and A.D. Police Files, Ghost in the Shell, any gig, but start with the movie just called Ghost in the Shell then you can work through t

  14. Baughbe says:

    Lets see,
Hiwou;s War: kids fighting the destruction of their village using ancient clockwork dolls at the end of feudal era Japan.
Soul Hunter: series based on the end of the Chinese Yin dynasty where the occupants of heaven are trying to manipulate the people of Earth. Has a most wonderful “Wise-Fool” hero.
Geneshaft: Futuristic where controlled genetics is the norm, few men are allowed to be born and women compete with each other as to who has the best genetics. Meanwhile the Geneshaft is a weapon made with found alien technology, and another unknown race is attempting to destroy Earth.
You’ve already seen Deathnote and Cowboy Bebop (Which version, original or remix?). IGPX is good if you’re into the racing theme, Andriod Kikaider is a heartbreak one, and you probably know all about Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, so I’ll just leave with a really left field suggestion:
Di Gi Charat: It … Is … Just … Plain … Strange! Looks like something a kid would like, but it is just too weird.

  15. Erik says:

what? no one suggested Bleach or Witch Hunter Robin yet?
    oh wait, now someone did.

  16. L says:

Deathnote, if you have not already

  17. SariaRasi says:

WOOT WOOT! Sailor Moon Fan! I’m going to be Sailor Jupiter for Halloween!

  18. Don B. says:

The first and third Full Metal Panic series. I’d recommend the second series but it’s setting is mostly in a high school. All four seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender are truly excellent if not true anime. It actually comes to a decent conclusion, if you can believe that.

  19. Don B. says:

If you go with Ghost in the shell, be prepared for some heavy thinking because it is not written for idiots. It is totally sweet though. You’ll love the Tachkomas.

  20. kiba says:

    Oh, Avatar, good call there.

  21. reynard61 says:

I’m a big fan of InuYasha. I would also suggest Bleach, Noein, maybe Negima! (although it can go into silly/romantic/over-the-top mode every so often), Wolf’s Rain (although it has a bit of a downer ending), Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Tactics and, if you’re not too squeamish, Monster is currently playing on SyFy’s Ani-Monday bloc of programs.

  22. werekitty says:

I would definitely recommend Trigun, it has ingenious design and it’s hilarious. Also Spiral (but my brother would tell you otherwise.)

  23. Dan says:

    wolf’s rain – hands down

  24. Felix Lorn says:

OOoh, and i’d recommend one called E-Depth. Currently, it’s a manga webcomic, but there are plans to make it an anime-but it is a good and free manga.

  25. 8472 says:

Haruhi Suzumiya! Trigun and The Big O! When They Cry Higurashi and Welcome to the NHK! And then, when you’ve done all that, find and watch The Maxx (even if it isn’t necessarily anime).

  26. senrath says:

Psst, 8472. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is more properly translated as “When the Cicadas Cry”, rather than When They Cry Higurashi.

  27. CatEns says:

Azumanga Daioh, Dragon Half, Cutie Honey, Pani Poni Dash…any of those are fun.

  28. Shadowwing says:

i haven’t seen a whole lot of anime, but i’ve liked most of what i have seen. probably my favorite is Bleach, at least partly because it has a bunch of episodes, and is still going strong. a couple others i’ve liked that haven’t been mentioned are Outlaw Star and Air Gear, though the latter kind of left things a bit unfinished.

  29. Styg says:

Shock and horror! Azumanga Daioh is NOT about silly over-the-top schoolgirl shenanigans! It’s just a regular sitcom, which happens to be animated, and it’s all the better for it. Remember kids, anime is not a genre, it’s a medium 😉

  30. Milamber says:

You should definitely watch “Shingetsutan Tsukihime”, “Noir”, “Elfen Lied”, “Haibane Renmei” and I can also second the mention of “Witch Hunter Robin”.

  31. Bob says:

One that I really enjoyed (and few have ever heard of) is Karau: Phantom Memory. Also check out FLCL – it’s only 6 episodes, but you’ll have to watch it a few times before you really figure out what’s going on there lol.

I also agree with the previous suggestions for Trigun, GITS (both the first season and SAC), Witch Hunter Robin, Outlaw Star, Air Gear, Chobits, and Avatar The Last Airbender (so totally can’t wait to see the live movie).

If you have Netflix, they have an awesome selection of anime titles available for streaming (most of the ones I mentioned, in fact) and their total selection for anime is rather impressive. If you don’t have Netflix, GET IT! =)

  32. Bob says:

Before I forget, one very important thing (although I feel I’m stating the obvious here)…

    Subbed, not dubbed!

  33. yuriko says:

    nice comic! xD
I really like the current one with the run-on sentence as well.

  34. fic7i0n41 says:

Full Moon Wo Sagashite, Stellvia of the Universe, Haibane Renmei (I know it’s been mentioned already, but it deserves a second one), Ergo Proxy, Noein, Nodame Cantabile, To Aru Majutsu no Index (A certain magical index), To aru kagaku no railgun (A certain scientific railgun), Read or Dream…

  35. Toomin says:

One Piece is probably one of the greatest stories of our generation. Read it; watch it; I don’t care. It’s absolutely fantastic. I don’t usually even like anime and I love it. Seriously. One Piece.

  36. Agentomega says:

    Neon Genesis Evangelion. ’nuff said.

  37. AsmariaMoon says:

I’m loving how creative you get with Kali’s costumes. Dressing her up as Alphonse = brilliant!

Dennou Coil is a great anime, it’s about these elementary school kids who wear AR (Augmented Reality, basically a virtual reality layered on top of our own reality) glasses and have adventures in cyberspace while running around their own neighborhood.

Read Or Die: The TV series (Abbreviates to R.O.D. the TV) is also pretty awesome. It’s about these three sisters that have the ability to manipulate any type of paper to their liking. They can make it strong enough to stop a bullet, or even make creatures out of it if they have enough. I also suggest seeing the OVA, which tells the backstory of Yomiko Readman, AKA “The Paper.”

If you’re looking for magical girl anime, I’d recommend Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, about Nanoha, a little girl who recieves a gem from an alien mage. The gem actually transforms into a magical staff, and is encoded with an AI of sorts called Raising Heart. It takes her a while, but Nanoha becomes supremely skilled at using Raising Heart, and befriends many like herself, and “befriends” many more.

  38. mightycleric says:

I know this is a bit late, but I figured I would give my recommendations as well. I like Trigun & Detective Conan (a.k.a. Case Closed) as my two favorite anime, and they, along with Bleach have been mentioned already. One I didn’t see mentioned that I really enjoyed was Trinity Blood, and I like the Fairy Tail manga, but I haven’t seen the anime yet.

  39. INHuman says:

    Kuroshitsuji and Godchild

  40. Ramani-Rayne says:

Soul Eater rivals FMA as my favorite anime.
The first three episodes are a bit odd, but after that it gets quite good

  41. Razmoudah says:

Okay, what about ‘Those Who Hunt Elves’ (it has two seasons) and ‘The Slayers’/’The Slayers Next’/’The Slayers Try’/’The Slayers Revolution’/’The Slayers Evolution-R’. The second one is four 26 episode seasons, though the final season was done several years later (has the original VA’s though, in both Japanese and English) and they change the title half-way through. I know the first has two seasons (I had the entire first season and the first DVD of the second, before they were stolen several years ago), though it does have a lot of wacky and over-the-top humor (and it does have one high-school girl, who is also a sniper, but they’re trapped on a foreign world so she isn’t attending any school or have any crushes sort of thing). If I went through my full list of Animes to Buy I could definitely find more (although you do have some on your list), but those are the first two to come to mind, with Star Ocean EX following right on their heels.

  42. Elvennations says:

Eureka Seven is my favorite. I also suggest Summer War. I agree on Read or Die, it’s one of my top 5.
