50 – Mall Rats Part 1

I didn’t turn 18 until my fourth week on campus. This made going to the local mall interesting, as they had very recently put in place a rule where anyone under 18 had to be accompanied by an adult.

This confused me years later when I got carded buying a ticket to an R-rated movie. Wouldn’t I have been kicked out if I were under 17? (I was 20 and wearing an RPI hoodie at the time, for the record.)

I do believe under 17 is allowed to go straight to the movie theater and nowhere else all by themselves, IIRC. Besides, I was often in the mall going party, which included a certain amount of the guards probably thinking I was someone in the party’s father.

That rule lead to an interesting birthday kidnapping for someone’s 18th birthday.

Local Mall = = Crossgates or Latham Farms?

  4. Jenny says:

Crossgates. I didn’t know about Colonie Center *or* Latham Anything until much exploring and Googling later.

New York. Troy, to be exact, as mentioned in I think the previous strip’s comments? Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is where the author went to school.
